Patent suit over Amazon Web Services software transferred to Northern District

VirtaMove Corp. alleges AWS' migration and container services use processes covered by two of its patents, claims Amazon denies. The tech giant also asserts VirtaMove cannot sue because it sells its own software through AWS's marketplace.

A federal lawsuit alleging that Amazon Web Services is built on software infringing a pair of patents has been transferred from Texas to the Northern District of California.

In the suit, which was filed in January 2024, VirtaMove Corp. claims programs AWS relies on to package applications follow the processes described in a pair of patents it owns -- Amazon says VirtaMove can't sue it because the Ottawa software company is an AWS customer.
