Jury awards $2.9M to former Santa Ana police employee in retaliation case

The jury found the City of Santa Ana retaliated against Rita Ramirez after she raised concerns about workplace mistreatment and served as a witness in an internal investigation.

A unanimous Orange County jury on Dec. 5 awarded Rita Ramirez, a former Santa Ana Police Department employee, $2.9 million for lost earnings and emotional distress caused by retaliation by the city.

The verdict followed a trial in which Ramirez alleged former Police Chief David Valentin and his command staff created a hostile work environment and retaliated after she reported gender-based mistreatment and served as a witness in an investigation into their conduct. Rita Ramirez...
