Senate bill seeks to shield courtgoers from immigration arrests

The proposal would bar unannounced immigration arrests on or near courthouse grounds, expanding existing protections and responding to renewed enforcement activity.

State Sen. Eloise Gómez Reyes, D-Colton, introduced legislation Tuesday aimed at curbing federal immigration enforcement activity at California courthouses.

SB 873, which Reyes said will be amended in coming weeks, would establish legal protections for people attending court proceedings from unannounced arrests by immigration agents on or near courthouse grounds.
