Insurers warn FAIR Plan is no longer California's last resort

Insurance industry representatives told California lawmakers that the FAIR Plan is becoming the default option for too many homeowners, warning that low rates and loose eligibility are driving explosive growth and threatening the plan's long-term stability.

Insurers had a stark message for California lawmakers on Wednesday: the state's insurer of last resort is becoming the first choice for too many homeowners.

"I can't emphasize enough the frustration of our members that they can't compete with the FAIR Plan," Mark Sektnan, a lobbyist for the American Property Casualty Insurance Association, told members of the Assembly Insurance Committee.
