Judge recuses in authors' copyright suit against AI companies

U.S. District Judge Trina L. Thompson recused herself from authors' copyright suit against Anthropic, Meta and other AI firms, vacating deadlines as plaintiffs pursue individual claims seeking up to $150,000 per work.

U.S. District Judge Trina L. Thompson in San Francisco recused herself from a copyright lawsuit against several AI giants in a written order Tuesday. Thompson didn't provide a reason for her recusal beyond "finding myself disqualified in the above-entitled action."

A spokesperson for the court said they don't have any information beyond what was in the order, and two sources close to the case said they weren't given a reason for the decision.
