Plaintiffs in 2nd Uber federal bellwether case win much lower verdict
Plaintiffs secured a second federal MDL bellwether win against Uber, but damages dropped to $5,000 due to a 24-hour limit, and the jury finding a liability for battery, not sexual assault. Legal observers say liability rulings still pose significant risk.
For the second time, plaintiffs won a verdict against Uber in the multidistrict litigation over allegations its drivers assaulted passengers, but the award was $5,000 this time, compared with $8.5 million in the first case.
In response to Monday's verdict, Uber pointed out that the North Carolina jury in this case found the company liable for battery and not sexual assault. The company said that it has a strong case on appeal.
