GOP lawmakers seek to strip party labels from secretary of state race

Proposed constitutional amendment revives a decades-old Republican push to remove party labels from the state's top elections office.

A proposed constitutional amendment would make California's secretary of state a nonpartisan office, removing candidates' party affiliations from the ballot.

If approved by two-thirds of each house of the Legislature and by voters, Assembly Constitutional Amendment 23 would add the office now held by Shirley Weber to the list of California offices for which party affiliations do not appear on the ballot. The measure was introduced on Monday.
