Newsom signs child online safety laws amid warnings of legal challenges
New laws targeting social media platforms, companion chatbots and other online services used by children are drawing First Amendment and federal preemption objections from technology and civil-liberties groups.
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a package of 13 bills Thursday imposing new restrictions on social media platforms, companion chatbots and other online services used by children, setting up potential legal fights with technology industry and civil-liberties groups.
Newsom announced the measures at the Bay Area Discovery Museum, arguing that California must act because the federal government has failed to establish national standards for social media and artificial intelligence.
