Who does big business call when it needs reliable legal help? According to a survey by Wellesley, Massachusetts-based BTI Consulting Group, more than half of the U.S. law firms that corporations rely on most often are also ranked in California Lawyer's California 50. At the same time, fewer law firms made the cut in BTI's annual "Power Rankings": Only 13 in the United States were selected for 2008, compared with 21 in 2006. That's a 38 percent drop?due, in part, to the fact that nearly half of the surveyed companies had fired at least one of their primary law firms in the preceding 18 months. A few firms that previously were not ranked grew in popularity, explains BTI President Michael Rynowecer, while some firms on the 2006 list apparently became complacent regarding their big-company clients. To formulate this year's rankings, BTI conducted 470 in-depth interviews with large buyers of legal services, of which 28 percent are Fortune 100 companies and 11 percent are Global 500 corporations. The survey spans industries from pharmaceuticals to financial services to telecommunications. These are the seven firms from the California 50 that are also on the 2008 BTI list of 13 (along with their BTI ranking): - Kirkland & Ellis (1) - Jones Day (2) - Sidley Austin (3) - Foley & Lardner (4) - Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (5) - Latham & Watkins (7) - Baker & McKenzie (10)
