Law firms, general counsel launch pro bono group for anti-Asian attack victims

The group will be co-chaired by Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP partner Debra Wong Yang and Tai Park, a partner at White & Case LLP. The board also includes Brian A. Sun, a partner at Norton Rose Fulbright; Wilson Chu, a partner at McDermott Will & Emery; and Don H. Liu, executive vice president and chief legal and risk officer for Target Corp.

A group of general counsel and over 40 law firms have launched a national pro bono initiative to help victims of anti-Asian hate attacks.

The Alliance for Asian American Justice will coordinate law firm pro bono resources to help victims receive legal support. The group will provide counsel to bring lawsuits, help victims seek compensation and work with law enforcement to ensure attackers are held accountable, according to a news release.

Liu, founding advisory board member of the alliance, and executive vice president and chief legal and risk officer for Target Corp.

In a prepared statement, Liu said the initiative allows hundreds of prominent lawyers of Asian descent to leverage their expertise and advocate for justice.

"Our non-Asian allies are likewise committed to joining us in this important work," Liu said. "We are eager to take action and look forward to many others joining in this fight."

Clients will be referred to the alliance by a group of legal organizations, such as The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and Asian Americans Advancing Justice.
