A man was detained by authorities after he launched an explosive device that detonated outside Dept. 9 of the Santa Maria Courthouse Wednesday, injuring two people.
Officials said the man tossed a small bag past the weapons screening station that detonated when it hit the floor around 8:40 a.m.
Santa Barbara County deputy sheriffs quickly apprehended the man as he attempted to flee to his vehicle, which reportedly contained additional weapons and ammunition. The courthouse was evacuated, and the area remained under lockdown late into the afternoon as local law enforcement and the FBI investigated.
Sheriff's spokesperson Raquel Zick said that the explosion came from an improvised explosive device. As of midday, investigators said they did not believe additional people were involved. She did not provide a motive for the bombing.
"The investigation is proceeding cautiously," Zick said. "Our bomb squad is examining the scene while detectives interview the suspect."
