Local students excel at Blank Rome's annual adopt-a-center business competition

Blank Rome partner Stacy D. Phillips speaking to local students at the 25th annual adopt-a-center business competition

Blank Rome LLP's 25th annual Adopt-A-Center event marked a significant milestone in youth entrepreneurship last weekend, as the national law firm partnered with C5 Los Angeles to empower students from under-resourced communities through an intensive business challenge program.

The event convened 60 ambitious students with more than 50 professionals for a comprehensive day of business education and mentorship.

Stacy D. Phillips, founder of Adopt-A-Center and partner at Blank Rome, said connecting these talented young individuals with experienced mentors will help them develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed.

"While we help prepare them for their first jobs, our broader mission is to cultivate these young minds and show them they can achieve anything. Who knows? One of these students could be the next Jeff Bezos," she said.

Amazon Studios' Associate General Counsel Ajay Patel delivered the keynote address, establishing a framework for innovation and professional development that would characterize the day's proceedings. The day culminated in a Shark Tank-style competition, where student teams presented their business plans before a panel of four expert judges.

The winning presentation, "Tailored Minds," introduced an innovative educational technology platform designed to provide customized learning and tutoring solutions for students and academic institutions.

The second-place team, "Home Base," presented a nonprofit initiative focused on addressing veteran homelessness through tiny house communities, while third-place winner, "The Cultural Kitchen," proposed introducing diverse culinary experiences to collegiate environments.

The event attracted an array of mentors spanning multiple industries. Notable participants included former Santa Monica Mayor Sue Himmelrich; Founder and CEO of Cypher Content Ed Sabin; and UCLA Health Chief of Breast Surgery Dr. Mediget Teshome. Industry leaders representing entertainment, healthcare, legal services, and business development provided guidance throughout the planning and presentation phases.

Porto's Bakery & Cafe contributed to the event's success by providing lunch service, while Disney enhanced the experience through promotional contributions. Winners received recognition and gift cards to support their continued educational pursuits.

Phillips said the initiative reflects Blank Rome's ongoing commitment to nurturing the next generation of business leaders through hands-on mentorship and real-world experience.
