Daily Journal wins top state awards for veterans tribute, AI coverage

The Daily Journal's "Salute to Veterans," a special tribute to lawyers who served in the U.S. armed forces, won a first-place prize Saturday at the annual California Newspaper Publishers Association awards.

Published on Nov. 11, 2024, the issue featured stories by judges and lawyers reflecting on how military service shaped their legal careers.

The article won in the Special Sections category, competing against similarly sized newspapers across California.

Associate Editor Jack Needham won first place in the Technology reporting category for his Dec. 6 article, "As lawyers and lawmakers tackle AI, the 1990s loom large," which compares early internet regulation to today's efforts to govern artificial intelligence.

Staff Writer Craig Anderson placed fourth in immigration reporting for his Dec. 1, 2024, article, "Supremacy clause hinders California's resistance to Trump deportation plans." Associate Editor Laurinda Keys took fifth in the Features category for her Nov. 5, 2024, piece, "Killing of California goat, NY squirrel is government overreach, attorneys say."

The awards were handed out at the Hilton Los Angeles at Universal Studios.
