Paul E. Burns is a leading arbitrator and mediator with more than 30 years of experience resolving high-stakes technology, intellectual property and complex commercial disputes, including more than 20 years as a neutral. Based in Los Angeles, he handles matters nationwide and internationally.
His practice focuses on technology-driven disputes involving software, patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, licensing, cybersecurity and internet platforms. He also handles related commercial, entertainment, health care, life sciences, employment, financial, real estate and franchise matters.
Mr. Burns has presided over more than 500 arbitrations and 150 mediations (in addition to hundreds of mediation simulations), including matters involving amounts in controversy exceeding $100 million. Parties, law firms and in-house counsel select Mr. Burns to resolve complex, high-value disputes requiring technical fluency, strong procedural control and efficient case management. As an arbitrator, he manages complex, discovery-intensive proceedings. As a mediator, he is valued for his preparation, persistence and pragmatic approach.
Mr. Burns is a Fellow of the invitation-only College of Commercial Arbitrators and is consistently recognized in Best Lawyers, where he has received multiple Lawyer of the Year honors. He holds an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell and is included on the Silicon Valley Arbitration & Mediation Center's Tech List of leading technology neutrals worldwide. He received his B.S. in Computer Science, magna cum laude, and J.D., magna cum laude, from Boston College.
Before focusing exclusively on ADR, Mr. Burns was a partner at an Am Law 200 firm and later the managing attorney of his own firm, which was recognized as one of Best Lawyers' Best Law Firms. He has taught ADR for more than 15 years at Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law's Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution and currently teaches ADR Law & Policy: Mediation and Arbitration at USC Gould School of Law. He is also a candidate for an M.A. in Clinical Psychology at Pepperdine University.
