Hon. Chad W. Firetag (Ret.) brings extensive judicial and legal experience to JAMS, serving as an arbitrator, mediator, referee and neutral evaluator. With a decade on the bench in both civil and family courts, along with earlier experience as a private practitioner and later as an administrator in a public agency, Judge Firetag has a history of resolving complex disputes across a wide range of legal areas.
During his tenure on the Superior Court, Judge Firetag presided over a variety of civil matters, including employment disputes, commercial litigation, business conflicts, breach of contract cases, catastrophic personal injury claims and environmental cases. His environmental docket included CEQA writs of mandate, land use disputes and eminent domain cases. He also handled sensitive sexual abuse matters, demonstrating the judicial temperament required to manage emotionally charged and legally complex disputes.
Judge Firetag held several leadership roles within the court. From 2022 to 2025, he served as supervising civil judge of the Riverside County Superior Court, overseeing the administration and management of the Civil Division. He also served on the court's Appellate Division from 2020 to 2025 and was appointed presiding judge of the Appellate Division from 2022 to 2025.
Since joining JAMS, Judge Firetag has developed a broad ADR practice, drawing on the full range of his judicial experience. As a mediator, he has guided parties through high-conflict disputes in business and commercial litigation, real property conflicts and serious personal injury cases, including sensitive sexual assault claims. His arbitration practice also spans employment, personal injury and commercial cases--areas where his years on the bench provide a distinct advantage.
