Justice Smith brings more than four decades of legal experience and a reputation for integrity and thoughtful judgment to his work as a neutral with Judicate West. Known for his calm demeanor and careful preparation, Justice Smith creates an environment where parties feel heard and respected while working toward meaningful resolution.

With more than 25 years of judicial experience, including service on both the Fresno County Superior Court and the California Fifth District Court of Appeal, Justice Smith presided over thousands of matters across a wide spectrum of legal issues. During his more than a decade on the Court of Appeal, he authored approximately 30 published opinions addressing complex disputes involving antitrust, employment, real estate, insurance bad faith, and medical malpractice. Prior to his appellate appointment, he served 14 years on the Fresno County Superior Court, including leadership roles as Presiding Judge and Supervising Judge of the Unlimited Civil Division.

Attorneys who have appeared before Justice Smith frequently note his patience, even-tempered approach, and commitment to understanding the key issues in every dispute. His ability to listen carefully, remain unflappable in contentious matters, and focus discussions on practical solutions has earned him the respect of litigants and counsel alike. One attorney described him as having "the ideal temperament" for dispute resolution, combining legal insight with a steady and approachable manner.

Before his appointment to the bench, Justice Smith spent nearly two decades in both public service and private practice, handling a wide range of civil matters.
