After 19 years as a civil trial attorney in private practice, Hon. Marie S. Weiner (Ret.) served 22 years as a Superior Court Judge, and now provides discovery referee, arbitrator and mediator services as a Neutral with ADR Services, Inc. She served on the San Mateo County Superior Court from 2002 until retirement in 2024. During that time, she gained recognition as a dedicated and effective leader in civil litigation, and accumulated extensive experience in adjudicating pretrial motions and presiding over civil jury and bench trials. Judge Weiner served as Civil Supervising Judge for 9 years, as well as Complex Civil Litigation Judge for 15 years, and CEQA Environmental Law Judge for 20 years.

Focusing on Arbitration and Discovery Referee assignments, Judge Weiner brings a disciplined, methodical approach to dispute resolution. She encourages the phased use of discovery tools to streamline proceedings and reduce costs, ensuring fair and efficient proceedings. Her dedication to civil trial efficiency and her background in business provides her with a strong foundation for handling a wide variety of disputes, including those involving employment, trade secrets, contract and business disputes, insurance coverage and bad faith, securities litigation, construction defect, consumer fraud, personal injury, CEQA, landlord/tenant, PAGA and class actions.

As a Discovery Referee, Judge Weiner is able to quickly schedule and address discovery disputes among litigants - thus, avoiding the delays inherent in trial court motion calendars. She also works with counsel for the parties to map out discovery plans or phased discovery to avoid future disputes, to avoid the need for (and expenses of) formal motion practice, and to keep discovery moving forward in an orderly, pragmatic, and economic fashion. Discovery conferences can be held as frequently or as infrequently as needed to fit the situation. In camera confidentiality or privilege review of document productions is available.
