VonCannon takes helm of LA women lawyers' group with focus on connection

HOLLYWOOD - The Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles installed Jennie Wang VonCannon of Crowell & Moring LLP as its new president Friday at the Taglyan Complex, where speakers emphasized connections, opportunities for women and the rule of law.

VonCannon, WLALA's first Taiwanese American president, was born in Brazil and was the first in her family to attend law school.

Her theme, "Connection That Counts: Together We Rise," grew partly from a trial lawyer who mentored her in high school.

She later found a community within WLALA, where members shared experiences and encouragement.

"What I value most are the conversations where we get beyond what we do and discover who we are," VonCannon said.

Chief U.S. District Judge Dolly M. Gee of the Central District of California administered the oath to the incoming WLALA officers and foundation board members and reflected on responsibilities to the rule of law.

"The founders created a framework, not a guarantee," Gee said. "They understood that institutions require maintenance, and that constitutional principles depend on people willing to uphold them."

"The rule of law is no different," she added. "It is not self-executing."

President-elect Brigit Greeson Alvarez of the Office of the County Counsel presented the Distinguished Service Award to Catherine E. Lhamon of UC Berkeley School of Law, recognizing her civil rights and public service career.

"I grew up as a lawyer in this legal community in Los Angeles," Lhamon said. "It's really terrific to come home."

WLALA Board of Governors member Mia Munro presented the Trailblazer Award to Genie E. Harrison. Both attorneys are with Genie Harrison Law Firm APC.

Harrison recalled arriving in Los Angeles 34 years ago knowing no one and often being the only woman lawyer in the room.

"I wanted to use my license to help people, and especially women," Harrison said.

Joanna Curtis, WLALA communications officer and a mediator at Signature Resolution, presented the Advancement of Women Award to the women of Signature Resolution.

Curtis said advancing women requires "more than simply opening a door."

"It requires mentorship, opportunity and investment in a culture where women are encouraged to lead and succeed," she said.

Retired Magistrate Judge Suzanne H. Segal accepted the award on behalf of the women of Signature Resolution and addressed women's representation in alternative dispute resolution.

"Why not propose three women for mediation? Why not propose three women for arbitrators?" Segal said. "Why not have an all-female panel for your next arbitration?"

WLALA Foundation President Anabel Sanchez of The Law Office of Anabel Sanchez urged attorneys to be candid with younger women about setbacks, pointing to her experience taking the California bar exam six times.

"I've never shared what I went through in my journey for the person that passed the first time," Sanchez said. "I've always shared it for the person that struggled."
