ANAHEIM - Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. was founded as a small surf shop in Newport Beach in 1980. Since then, the retail clothing chain has expanded nationally, operating 730 surf and skate apparel shops in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. The company, however, was rocked by the economic downturn and by a surge of competitor companies targeting the market. It announced in December the company would close 175 to 200 underperforming stores over 14 months.
