Denise L. Jackson was on vacation in San Diego 10 years ago when AMN Healthcare Services Inc. decided to add a lawyer to its executive board.

Jackson's brother-in-law, then the marketing director at the health care staffing company, recommended her for the job. And as luck would have it, she and her husband were both in the market for new opportunities. Facing a choice between AMN's opening and an offer made to her husband, they picked San Diego over New York.
