As late as 1968, a billboard at the entrance to Smithfield, N.C., declared the town "KLAN Country," signifying the long-time strength in that area of the Ku Klux Klan.

Half a century earlier, in 1914, Charles Robinson's maternal grandfather, Charles William Furlonge, emigrated from the West Indies and became a doctor in that town, where he treated poor families, both black and white.
