Lee C. Cheng, general counsel of online technology retailer Newegg Inc., got his company out of a troublesome fix with the state of New York last year. The state passed a law that required online retailers like Newegg that have marketing ties to New York-based Web sites to collect sales tax from state residents, despite having no physical presence there.

Similar companies fought the law in court, with Amazon filing a lawsuit in 2008 claiming the law was unconstitutional... (continued)
