SAN FERNANDO -- Superior Court Judge Nicholas F. Daum had been on the bench only a few months when a defendant in his misdemeanor court sought a demurrer by claiming California's ban on brass knuckles was unconstitutional under the current U.S. Supreme Court's 2nd Amendment law.
Daum was a new judge but he wasn't unfamiliar with complex legal issues; he had been a civil litigator for 20 years.
