COMPTON - From behind the bench, Judge Stephanie A. Dixon sees the familiar faces of criminal defendants who've made wrong turns -- but rarely evil ones.

After nearly three decades defending the accused, the former public defender said she tries to balance compassion with caution, making split-second rulings that can determine whether someone goes home or stays behind bars.
