FULLERTON -- The first time Cynthia A. Nichols and Scott M. Van Camp faced off in a courtroom, she was a deputy district attorney, he was a public defender, and the case was a heated domestic violence trial.

During closing arguments, Van Camp made a comparison that landed wrong. "The victim," he said, "was no bigger than Ms. Nichols."
