LOS ANGELES - On Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo's desk sits a photograph of her son, David Olmedo-Barrera, taken during his professional baseball career -- moments after he hit a home run for the Mariachis de Guadalajara and glanced toward the stands, flashing the "I love you" sign toward his mother.

"He had just hit a home run," she said. "He's smiling, looking into the audience, and I know he was looking at me."
