LOS ANGELES - Superior Court Judge Stephanie Story says she remembers sitting on the floor of her living room as her then-toddler played with a stack of blocks. The child knocked the tower over, looked at the scattered pieces, and said, "It's too hard."

Story, still deciding whether she would take the bar exam a sixth time, told her daughter, "You don't give up because something's too hard."
