LOS ANGELES - Presiding Judge Sergio C. Tapia II has spent most of his life being self-reliant, but running the nation's largest trial court has caused him to reconsider what effective leadership looks like.

"For the longest time I was that do-it-yourself kind of guy," he said. "Whether it was a project at home or remodeling a bathroom, I would do it myself."

"I have become very comfortable with asking for help," he said.
