SAN BERNARDINO -- The path that eventually brought San Bernardino Superior Court Judge Charlie L. Hill Jr. to the bench began with the sound of a stenograph machine.

His mother was studying to become a court reporter when Hill was in elementary school. She practiced at home, sometimes without headphones, allowing him to hear the legal proceedings she was transcribing.
