LOS ANGELES - David Cunningham was 5 when his grandmother took him by bus from Memphis to Los Angeles to live with his father.
A rest stop in Dallas gave them just enough time for a quick bite to eat, so they walked to a funky old diner and sat down. And they waited.
Finally, a waitress said, "'We don't serve colored people here.'"
