A job advertisement from the district attorney's office drew Michael B. Harper to Trinity County in 2001, but his attraction to the rural, mountainous area began five years earlier on the Pacific Crest Trail.
He and his wife had hiked a section of the trail through the county, and they remembered it as a stark contrast to their Sacramento home.
