SANTA BARBARA - Judge Colleen K. Sterne raised her cane and pointed to the old clock against the far wall of her downtown Santa Barbara courtroom.
Her mentor, the late Judge J. William McLafferty, installed the clock behind the jury box so he wouldn't have to turn his back on jurors to look at another clock on the opposing wall.
