SAN FRANCISCO - A once abrasive former cop whom a prosecutor labeled a "judicial thug," San Francisco County Superior Court Judge James J. McBride said he's taken his critics' brickbats to heart and cleaned up his act.

His redemption came as McBride regained lawyers' trust and pushed hard to aid a fellow judge in the crosshairs of a retention challenger.
