SAN DIEGO - One factor in Judith L. Haller's decision to become a justice on the Court of Appeal was her background in history.

At one point, she wanted to become a college professor or administrator, and she earned a master's degree in the subject. Her thesis examined an idea by presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln to head off secession by southern states.
