SAN JOSE - When Cynthia A. Sevely is asked about the most difficult challenge of making the switch from bar to bench, she does not cite some of the expected responses such as managing caseloads or learning case law.

The Santa Clara County Superior Court judge was used to walking between courtrooms and chatting with colleagues during her 28 years as a Santa Clara deputy district attorney.
