SAN DIEGO - Near the jury box in Superior Court Judge Amalia L. Meza's downtown San Diego courtroom sits a big bowl filled with Milky Way, Three Musketeers and Baby Ruth candy bars.

Meza buys them at Costco and puts them out to ensure jurors stay awake and alert.

"I always have a supply," she said. "Especially in the afternoons, I see jurors start to doze off."
