SAN DIEGO - In her misdemeanor arraignment and trial call department, San Diego County Superior Court Judge Marian F. Gaston often encounters defendants with lengthy criminal records.

When she handles sentencing for them, Gaston said she focuses more on what could be done to help them turn their lives around than simply how much jail time they should get.
