SAN FRANCISCO - A painted relief of three judges sleeping through a lawyer's animated presentation hangs on the wall next to Justice Stuart R. Pollak's desk.

The artwork, based on a cartoon by the French painter and caricaturist Honore Daumier, has accompanied the justice for more than three decades, from private practitioner to trial court judge and appellate court justice.
