LOS ANGELES - Every once in a while, Commissioner Sam Bubrick tells his boss he's thinking about retiring.

Each time, she talks him out of it - even though, technically, he already is retired.

"We need him," said Patricia M. Schnegg, supervising judge of the criminal division of Los Angeles County Superior Court. "He is a huge part of our operation."
