There were lawyers in front of U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer on a recent Friday, but he didn't really need them.

The San Francisco federal judge was doing both their jobs, arguing first one side and then the other, stabbing with his index finger to hammer his points - or theirs - home.

Once he'd finished, he drew a breath.
