INDIO - If Judge Charles E. Stafford had spent another minute on the Riverside County Superior Court bench, he might have died.

Twice during the summer of 2007, Stafford felt light-headed, as if he might pass out, while a severe pain shot through the back of his neck. The first time, he asked for a recess and retreated to his chambers until his condition improved.
