MONTEREY PARK - Growing up as one of 14 children in James Island, S.C., Tony L. Richardson's formative years were spent "living off the land" in the small rural township, located on a spit of earth just off the coast of Charleston. It was there that he decided to focus on academics, not in small part due to his interest in the law and the dearth of African-American attorneys he saw growing up.
