LOS ANGELES - Mark Windham was 30 when he defended his first death-penalty case. For inspiration, he would spend his lunch hour gazing at paintings at the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Los Angeles.

"It reminded me to be creative, to step outside the box," Windham said.
