SIMI VALLEY - Judge Barbara Lane has presided over thousands of hearings during her 25 years on the Ventura County bench but never one like the emergency session she conducted at a local hospital.

While assigned to probate in 2005, Lane received word of a critically ill infant. The doctor believed a blood transfusion would save the newborn's life. But the procedure violated the parents' religious beliefs. ... (continued)
