SAN FRANCISCO - Newton J. Lam misses his roots.

Following an extended period as a deputy public defender and jurist for San Francisco County's criminal courts, the superior court judge entered foreign territory last year, taking on his first civil assignment.

In a recent interview, Lam admitted without hesitation that he missed the Hall of Justice. But, he said, it was time to expand his horizons.
