SAN FRANCISCO — At the beginning of his senior year at Denison University, John K. Stewart was sure of what he didn't want.

High school calculus was the end of the road for his math studies; physics did the same for science. He'd arrived on campus looking to catch on as an end on the football team, but only got in at linebacker and "meat squad" center.
