WHITTIER - Cathryn Franco Brougham grew up in a working class suburb of Los Angeles, where independence meant a high school diploma and a job.
Then her single mom, a law firm receptionist, moved the teenage Brougham and her younger sister to the more well-healed city of South Pasadena, where college was not only an option but a given.
