SAN DIEGO - The murder of her physician father in 1988 infused Joan Irion with a certain perspective, both as a lawyer and as a judge.

John K. Irion, retired from the U.S. Public Health Service, had been working as a physician at a steel plant in Pittsburg, Calif. While at work, he was shot to death by a disgruntled steelworker who had been given medical retirement after suffering a work-related injury.
