SAN DIEGO — Rachel Cano never spoke with defendants in her 24 years as a prosecutor, but she’s spent the last year catching up, with 100 cases per day as a San Diego County Superior Court judge.

Appointed a year ago, Cano has used her new role to figure out why she sees some faces repeatedly. During sentencing, she’ll directly address certain habits that she’d like to see the defendant change.
