LOS ANGELES -- Judge Jeffrey S. Cohen-Laurie volunteers to hear adoptions on National Adoption Day because he knows firsthand just how special establishing a new family can be.

"The adoption proceedings are the happiest days in people's lives," he said. "It's incredibly inspiring for me to participate, especially since I was once in the same courtroom they are. ... I became an adoptive parent not so long ago."
